About

Our Story

restoring history

Built in 1895, this historic Victorian farmhouse was originally owned by the Caldwell family, who ran the local Meat Market in town. The current owner/co-host worked diligently with a local architect, builder, and the historic preservation committee to fully restore the facade of home from 2019-2021.

This included designing and rebuilding an architecturally relevant open front porch with new flooring and new siding, restoring all original woodwork/shingles, and rebuilding a new chimney. The interior has many modern amenities while allowing the vintage charm of the house to shine. Beautiful woodwork is seen throughout including built-ins and hardwood flooring. All exterior doors in the home have been updated and replaced to make the home more energy efficient, with the exception of one original porch door featuring original glass window panes.

Meet your hosts, Carl and Samantha

Samantha moved to Saint Charles in 2011 and, because of her love for history and detail, sought out old houses. After a short search, she bought the home that would become the Victorian Fox. (You might be able to still see what it looked like because she cannot figure out how to get Google Street view to remove that blasted picture.) She loves sustainable fashion, sturdy furniture, aged steaks and amber lighting, reminiscent of oil burning lamps.

Samantha is an avid runner, concert goer, working professional and the life of the party. She enjoys traveling to new cities and immersing herself in the culture based on the recommendations of locals - and Reddit. That is how she and Carl met, not Reddit, but hanging out in a local town doing what the locals do. As they conversed, each discovered the other loved music, dancing, and secret events that only a few people knew about.
Carl worked for years in real estate due to his love for restoring houses after years of neglect and reimagining under utilized spaces. Though he is originally from Texas, he got to Saint Charles as quick as he could. Few things bring him greater joy than seeing people light up as they eat a meal he cooked or enjoy an event he recommended. Carl is an avid singer, runner, cyclist, and he aspires to leave the Chicago cold every winter for somewhere with warm beaches and sunny skies.

As hosts, these two have blended their love for history, good food, community, and music, into this Victorian retreat. Because they love to stay in places that are centrally located so they can walk, run and cycle around town, they know The Victorian Fox checks all those boxes. Having lived in the area for 15 years, they know this is the perfect spot for you to do the same in the Fox Valley area!
